Throughout 2026 we will be highlighting women farmers, research on women farmers and more through a series of feature programming. You will also find our celebration extending through podcasts, additional educational events, and a virtual IYWF conference in December of 2026. What Can the U.S Census of Ag tell us about womend farmers in the USA?
January 30 – Noon Central Time

Dr. Katherine Dentzman earned her B.A. as a double major in Environmental Science and Sociology at Central Michigan University and both her M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology with a specialization in Ecological Food and Farming Systems at Michigan State University.
After graduation she held multiple USDA-funded postdoctoral research associate positions at both Washington State University and University of Idaho, followed by a position with the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture as a Social Science Program Specialist.
Dr. Dentzman specializes in transdisciplinary agri-food research at the intersection of environmental and social sustainability. She is broadly interested in ‘unbelonging’ and community in agri-food systems, particularly focusing on the implications for conjoint dimensions of sustainability.
Colette DePhelps is a Community Food Systems Area Extension Educator and Associate Professor at the University of Idaho. DePhelps has over 30 years’ experience building local and regional food systems and collaborative relationships with land grant universities, non-profit technical assistance providers, private entrepreneurs and agricultural producers across Idaho and the western mountain states.
DePhelps is co-founder of the Idaho/Washington Cultivating SuccessTM small farm education program which has provided in-depth and experiential whole farm, production, and risk management education for beginning farmers and ranchers since 2000. DePhelps also provides leadership for the Inland Northwest Artisan Grains team, University of Idaho’s Women in Ag program, serves as the Annie’s Project Idaho State Coordinator and works closely with the Nez Perce Tribe HIPT Food Coalition.
DePhelps earned her B.S. in Environmental Studies at Western Washington University and her M.S. in Environmental Science at Washington State University. Prior to joining the faculty at University of Idaho, DePhelps co-founded and directed an Inland Northwest small farm and food systems non-profit organization.
